Vedran Mimica - The Berlage Affair

Udruženje hrvatskih arhitekata (UHA) i UPI2M BOOKS pozivaju Vas na predstavljanje knjige “The Berlage Affair” autora Vedrana Mimice u četvrtak 12.10 2017. u 18 sati u Udruženju hrvatskih arhitekata, Trg Bana Josipa Jelačića 3/1, Zagreb.
Knjigu će predstaviti autorski tim, Vedran Mimica, Vladimir Mattioni, Sonja Leboš i Damir Gamulin, a u razgovoru o knjizi sudjelovat će Hrvoje Njirić, Joško Paro i Emil Jurcan.
Izdavač knjige je Actar, Barcelona / New York i IITAC, Chicago, a distributer za jugoistočnu Europu UPI2M BOOKS, Zagreb.
Vedran Mimica profesor je arhitekture i urbanizma na Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) u Chicagu. Rođen je u Zagrebu 1954., a 1990., na poziv Hermana Hertzbergera, pridružio se Berlage Institutu u Rotterdamu gdje je bio zadnji Dekan instituta od 2007. do 2012. Predavao je na brojnim arhitektonskim školama poput Architectural Association, London; ETH, Zurich; Sorbonne, Paris; Sveučilišta Columbia, New York, Massachusetts Instituta za tehnologiju (MIT), Sveučilišta u Kaliforniji (UCLA) i Katoličkog sveučilišta u Santiago de Chileu.
Sudjelovao je u uređivanju i izdavanju nekoliko ključnih knjiga suvremene hrvatske arhitekture (Randić&Turato: Arhitektura tranzicije, Novi svjetionici hrvatskog Jadrana, Suvremena hrvatska arhitektura: Testiranje stvarnosti). Od 2003. do 2012. godine nezavisni je stručnjak za Nagradu Europske unije za suvremenu arhitekturu Mies van der Rohe. S Wiel Aretsom pokreće MCHAP (Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize) 2013. godine, kao pandan Miesovoj europskoj nagradi. Kao kritičar i kustos za arhitekturu Mimica objavljuje u hrvatskom i globalnom tisku. Bio je kurator za International Architectural Biennale Rotterdam 2007. godine, te kurator hrvatske prezentacije na Venecijanskom Biennalu 2006. godine.

With this extraordinary book Vedran Mimica has, in effect, documented a large part of his life’s work to date, which up to now has been inseparable from the evolution of the Berlage Institute. (….) This is a uniquely hybrid work, for it is, in the first instance, a wittily scrambled, diaristic record of the events through which the haptically fertile discourse of the Berlage would come sharply into focus. (…) Throughout this palimpsest, one is able to gather fragments here and there of Mimica’s own development from his basic education in Zagreb to his research work at TU Delft under Hertzberger’s supervision in the late 1980s, to the large number of distinguished architects, theorists, and critics with whom he was in contact during the two decades of his teaching at the Berlage.(….) Far from being a potted history, this is an exceptionally lively account of a unique institution, highlighting many of the ideological differences and debates of the time.
