The typical way of thinking about the environment is to divide it into exclusive categories, the natural and the urban, where the existence of one excludes the possibility of the other. This scheme recognizes the basic human desire and necessity for both by collapsing the essential qualities of both into a single urban scheme.
Our proposal takes inspiration from nearby Medvednica by literally inviting our own mountain, Mount Badel, into the heart of the city. Its peak provides an iconic urban symbol that can be seen from around the city, orienting people towards the Kvaternikov Trg Square area. The mountain form accommodates a critical density by allowing a range of programs at the street level, upon which are stacked residential towers with light, air and views across the city.
From its peak Mount Badel slopes down towards the the perimeter of the block, allowing a strong visual impact on the skyline, but a careful scale relationship to its immediate context. Public areas are carved out of the mountainside along Subiceva and Derencinova, further tying the scheme into the city.
The mountainside park features over 12,000 square meters of green space that improves the ecological footprint of the development by reducing runoff, cleaning the air, and providing insulation. The mountainside park features walking trails where pedestrians can access grassy plateaus for picnics, benches for reading, and a small amphitheater for live performances.
Mount Badel carefully protects the rich architectural heritage of Badel Block by weaving all protected buildings into the scheme. The Yeast Production and Processing buildings are stitched into the mountainside facades as historical portals, while the Distillery remains detached from the new development and is given its own plaza.
