PLAZA GORICA
The Badel block intervention is based on the existing historic buildings. The foundations of the more recent factories are the connections between all the industrial architectural heritages. Therefore these foundations were the starting point for the design process of PLAZA GORICA.
The strength of this area is the small-scale industry, the market square adjacent to the site and the existing residents of the block or the ones across the street. The focus is on providing a space for the gathering and expressing of human relations. This plan provides a distribution of people, knowledge, natural sources and cultural assets on a local level.
To establish a connection between all the blocks and open areas a pedestrian based network is introduced. An area emphasizing on local implementations that will improve the local ecology, which effects the everyday life. This web of life is the backbone of the design. It’s in this area where the social capital will emerge. It’s in this area where the livelihood of the market square will be pulled into PLAZA GORICA. It’s in this area where the existing cultural assets will flourish and the surrounding streets will be tapped into the new urban fabric.
The identity of the block will anchor PLAZA GORICA in Zagreb. The public layer is constructed of large wooden shutters with openings that grant a view into stores, and the cultural centre. On top, the blocks are materialized in light grey concrete. This contrast makes sure that there is a clear difference between the to types of intervention.
The old distillery is the cultural catalyst. It’s a pop podium that can also function as a backdrop for performances outside. The old distillery becomes a hidden gem that will only be discovered when you wander through PLAZA GORICA.
