Opis
Badel block hosts some interesting existing buildings with a potential public interest, today unexpressed. In addition to existing buildings, which are an important emergency, there is also the need to re-urbanize the block, returning it to the rest of the city. Reassembling the bounds of block establishing a direct relationship with the surrounding public spaces and retrieving existing buildings are the two priorities that characterize the project.
In this sense, the public space becomes an important instrument of cohesion between the interior of the block and public spaces that already exist in neighboring areas, especially the market in the northeast NE corner between Šubićeva street and Martićeva street, which is already characterized by vibrant business and social life. There is therefore a need to make the block permeable to pedestrian flows maintaining in any case the identity and the shape of block that characterizes the whole city center of Zagreb. The public space becomes therefore the link between Badel block and the rest of the city, permeating the ground floor of the entire block. The exclusion of vehicular traffic, limited to some specific public services, allows full use of public facilities by users, scaling the built environment from the industrial scale to that of social relations.
A re-interpretation of block’s urban structure allows the re-organiziation of the whole block, creating a hierarchy between public and private spaces and between different functions.
The project aims to start a process of transformation that leads to a complex and articulate intervention that wants to redevelop existing buildings, connect and improve surrounding public spaces, redesign and return a central block to the city of Zagreb by enhancing social and cultural spaces.
