A development of LIGHT for Badel Block in Zagreb
The proposal is rooted on the guidelines of the precedent ground properties according the cadastral plan of 1913 (the industrial buildings are on the site). The historically elongated plots from North to South act as a link of the block’s memory to the present configuration.
The spatial continuity of the market’s axe across Šubićeva Street incorporates the East-West directionallity into the project.
These two orders are the main networks of the place and respond to the preexistent building.
In this way four bands define an harmonical, alternating rhythm. Thus the Yeast production factory building (distillery) integrated in one of the free bands, enhances the position.
The buildings, concentrated in big spaces (naves), link the old facades of Gorica Factory, and give continuity through the limit of Derenčinova Street. There are pedestrian walks around their facades in both directions.
Regarding the inner spaces, open volumes of double high and free circulations relate the facilities. An hibrid use of the space: comercial, cafee shops, restaurants, retail shoping is set in several levels. The green roof of these buildings complete the public space with outdoor spaces.
Over the plinth organisational system, a group of vertical buildings in spatial contraposition to the previous ones take in a layered program of residential and office facilities. High and slender buildings over the horizontal naves. Each Tower have different levels in order to integrate its program. The use of them respond to the situation, distances, cantilevers. The seven towers are the same type with volumetrical variations in aim of bluring their impact in a flexible manner.
“The distillery” building is constituted as the central piece of the ensemble of volumes with doted with a strong cultural use and identity: new spaces underground conected with the exterior, and a big Hall presentación in the top (flexible spaces) built with industrial glass. This is a real Light Box (light house) for Badel.
