Opis
The design enhances the positive qualities of the Badel block transforming the area into a vibrant, dense yet liveable new centre for the east part of Zagreb Lower town. The project proposes a solution that will re-establish the Badel block as a new cultural and production core for the city, an engine for a sustainable and modern economical system based on small scale specialized business activities and research. The New Badel Block will constitute a showcase of Croatian entrepreneurship and creativity, aiming at an international visibility and local interaction.
The surface of the block is treated as a uniform and recognizable whole characterized by the use of materials and with specific spatial features. Connected to the surrounding city areas thanks to a series of public squares, open air auditoriums and green areas this ''platform'' becomes a recognizable whole in the Zagreb lower town. The proposed public spaces are enriching the new pedestrian connections creating a lively town-like environment, hosting the most diverse events and activities and attracting a large and diversified number of users in the area.
The program and spatial features introduced by the intervention are contextual and referring back to the history of this place creating a new identity for the Badel Block in relation to the city and its past. These functions are organized in levels. Each function is grouped with others with the same public outreach or accessibility and organized in relation to specific open spaces located on different levels of the design. The proposal responds to some of the spatial issues of the current block such as the preservation of the context and building heritage, the lack of public spaces, acceptable city density, the attractiveness of the area for a wider public.
