RESPONSIVE EDGE, URBAN INTERIOR
Many recent block redevelopments in Zagreb have fallen victims of maximizing efficiency and profit at the expense of diversity and public space. The new Badel block and Badel square should become a paradigm for an alternative strategy. We propose an urban planning strategy for the Badel block that supports heterogenity through form, program and ownership, to provide a high quality sustainable development. The ''responsive'' block perimeter and the rich urban block interior, is not only of value to the Badel block itself, but also to the surrounding areas.
The block''s size and industrial heritage provide both opportunity and obligation to rethink the block redevelopment not as a large architectural piece but as a far reaching urbanistic project. We propose an urban strategy that offers a larger shared infrastructure (underground parking, rainwater harvesting, district heating and cooling), in conjunction with the development of two towers. A rich urban grain is proposed; the Badel block should be designed by more than one architect and delivered by a number of developers, even cooperatives.
The Distillery building is paired back to a shell for performance and theatre, whilst the Gorica factory and section of wall, become frameworks for new urban spaces. But the industrial heritage is not only that; progressive typologies of live / work and workshops are also proposed to continue the working and trading activity of the block. The Distillery and new cultural buildings form Badel square; the heart of the block interior containing cafés and shops on the ground floor. Public routes link into this public space, as do the pedestrian parking access, to make a lively and rich urban interior.
