The Badel squares
The City of Zagreb is looking for a vision on this complex block. Instead we propose a change of definition; the Badel squares.
Two contradicting concerns guideline the ambitions of the city. The site should clearly integrate in the surrounding, while its industrial past remains sensible. These two concerns find their equals in the two main typologies; the industrial complex forced in a dense urban fabric with building-block typology. The conflict between both constitutes the character of the location.
A building strip is introduced as a continuation of the perimeter definition, but instead of following the perimeter all around a large courtyard the shape is informed in order to integrate the historical buildings and define two public squares. The Yeast building is relieved from the interior of the building block and becomes part of public space. The Gorica building will be the central element on the large square, which incorporates the existing market.
The sequence of the new and existing squares become a continuous public space with different qualities. A tower at the corner of Šubićeva street is the needle around which this spaces evolves and a landmark in the city.
The historical buildings are renovated and the relationship between them remains sensible, specially the space between the Yeast building and the Gorica building is considered meaningful. In these beautiful buildings all cultural and leisure activities will take place.
The two interconnecting squares make the present interior of the block part of the surrounding public space and pedestrian routes. The Šubićeva street is paved as part of the square where pedestrians will have priority over vehicles. The present Badel block won''t exist anymore, it will be known by its squares.
