Opis
Isolated from previous development plans, Badel Block has recorded multiple timeline in it. With historical marks on the site, a new type of public space experience is served. Ban Jelačić Square is located nearby with a live market area right next to it. And also a park, one block away, serves the city. These 3 elements as 1 unit has served as a urban core for the city’s social, cultural, and economic activities. As the surroundings of Ban Jelačić Square, Badel Block inherits the very same conditions. Interpreting this advantages as an urban elements of Zagreb, Badel Block can perform as another urban unit for the city and strengthen each urban units performance by bridging each other. This bridged area as it is shown in the diagram takes advantages due to increasing volume of traffic. This leads to social activities and idealy results in cultural and commercial benefits to the bridged area. 2 bridged urban units such as Ban Jelačić Square and Badel Block can thread these activities and keep them alive constantly. As the consequences, the urban value of the bridged area flourishes with the 2 cores of Zagreb’s urban units.
Ban Jelačić Square has served the city dwellers and tourists for a long time. With Badel Block, they strengthen themselves and create a bridged zone between them. Compared to Ban Jelačić Square, Badel Block has not performed as Ban Jelačić Square has been. As a new type of public space experience, Badel Block provides various programs for city dwellers and visitors. Programmed with existing historic values for preservation, all programs are formed and positioned based upon the access to the historic mark of the site. From any direction, it is accessible and visually exposed. Minimized interruption with new development on the site, historic marks are one of the primary concerns of the programming process as it is shown in the second diagram. The open square with a historic mark in the center plays a key role for the Badel Block urban unit to function. Restoration and preservation of the historic mark is the priority not only because it has historic value to be preserved but also because it performs as the landmark of Badel Block.
Badel Block serves both dwellers and visitors with diverse programs such as residential apartments, hotels, commercial/retails, offices and more providing services that fit in today’s urban life. Although some of these programs has developed around Ban Jelačić Square in a period of time, all these programs are integrated vertically on site serving closely for visitors and residents. Due to this density on site, preventing high energy consumption results in facade design. To generate energy, technologies such as solar panels and geothermal heat pumps can be integrated easily but also as part of the design itself, the facade gets patterned panels. The temperature goes up to near 40 degree Celcius in Zagreb in summer. These panels block the direct sunlight that heats up the interior space but allow the necessary amount of light to lit up the space at the same time. For this purpose, all these panels are installed facing south. For the north facing exterior, dual low-e glass is installed to retain heat better in the winter.
