CHANGING CITY
Zagreb, a growing, changing city. Like many european cities, Zagreb is facing complex problems such as growing populations, an increasing number of tourists and coping with infrastructural demands.

BADEL BLOCK
In most cities the old and existing compete with the new. The Badel Block has a unique character, due to it''s history as an industrial part of the city. By opening up the Badel Block and making it accessible from all sides people can use the whole block making it into a city within the city.

STRUCTURE
The proposal is based on a structure that evolves from a simple grid, using the old Distillery to define the grid size. We adapted the scale to the existing buildings within the block and its surroundings. By molding the building structure to create interesting and variable street formations and squares we made the city landscape close and open.

BUILDINGS
Every city has it''s scale. By keeping it you can make the new feel self-evident and integrated. To give the illusion of a smaller scale and to let in the daylight into the streets and facades, we cropped the buildings, creating inclined roofs which give the structure identity.

DISTRIBUTION
We have placed most of the retail close to the nearby market. The northeastern part of the proposal is more residential, and the western part is for commercial purposes. In the middle we have placed the cultural functions.

PARKING
A parking garage stretches out 2,5 stories underneath the competition area.

CITYSPACE
Softly inclined slopes and ramps form urban rooms and provide seating areas. They form small pockets off the main passages or create clear borders and directions.

ECOLOGY/SUSTAINABILITY
Rainwater is collected from the inclined roofs. Solar cells and windmills are placed where they are most valuable and where they don''t interfere with overall design of the area. Courtyards provide micro climates that balance the climate changes.
Recyclable materials are used for the construction.
Recycling stations are placed on the first garage floor, where they are easily accessible.
