Francine Houben, founder of the architects’ firm Mecanoo architecten in Delft, is one of Europe’s most active architects. She lectures all over the world and takes part as a jury member in many prestigious competitions. In her designs innovation and sustainability play an important role. She combines architecture, urban planning and landscaping in an unorthodox way. Examples are the designs for the Philips Business Innovation Centre FiftyTwoDegrees in Nijmegen, the Library Technical University of Delft, Municipal Offices and Station in Delft, the Wei-Wu-Ying Center for the Arts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and the Library of Birmingham in the U.K. With her international staff of more than 90 people, Francine Houben is working on projects in The Netherlands, Spain, Taiwan, South Korea, U.K., U.S.A and Switzerland. Since 2000 Francine Houben is professor in Architecture and Aesthetics of Mobility at the Delft University of Technology. In 2007 she was visiting professor at Harvard University in Cambridge, U.S.A. She received numerous awards and recognitions such as honorary fellowships of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the American Institute of Architects in 2007. In 2008 she was awarded the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year Award.In 2010 she was asked as a member of the Akademie der Künste, department of architecture in Berlin. In 2011 the book Dutch Mountains was released, a chronicle of Francine Houben and eight special projects in five different countries.

Danas, 22. prosinca 2011. u ZgForumu je predstavljen natječaj za urbanističko-arhitektonsko rješenje Bloka Badel. Natječaj Blok Badel bit će prvi hrvatski arhitektonsko-urbanistički natječaj proveden u potpunosti putem interneta. Raspisivač i investitor je Grad Zagreb, a provoditelj i organizator Društvo arhitekata Zagreba.
